and police say he has access to multiple weapons and assault rifles. cnn's kyung lah is joining us from los angeles where the police chief is calling it extremely worry some and scare ree. what's the latest kyung? >> reporter: certainly scary for anyone connected to the police department in southern california. this is where today's shooting spree began but all of this, wolf, began earlier this week. the murder spree began on sunday with the double killing of a newly engaged couple, monica quan and keith lawrence, quan, the daughter of a retired lapd captain, the officer who represented christopher dorner in front of the police board that eventually fired him. dorner refers to quan's murder in his man guess stow. he writes, i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own. i'm terminating yours. self-preservation is no longer important to me. i do not fear death as i died long ago on january 2nd of '09, a date a few month after dorner was fired as a police officer. the lapd fanned out, launching 40 protection details throughout southern california. >> lapd is the specific target but a

: a california fish and wildlife official tells us they believe dorner was driving a stolen car when he shot at two of their wardens as he passed them, damaging their vehicle. others in this area also crossed dorner's path. it was in this group of houses that dorner at one point encountered a couple cleaning one of the houses. he tied them up and stole their car. this was right across the street from one of the law enforcement command posts and a very popular ski resort where people are still feeling the anxiety over what happened. at bear mountain resort, where hundreds of skiers and snowboarders gather every day, one of the managers says people had been living in fear for days knowing that dorner was in the area. >> some of the employees that work around here, they were feeling the vibration. it was scaring them. they had their guns loaded sleeping -- you know, sleeping with their guns. >> reporter: kaitlyn had come to spend her 17th birthday on the slopes just as the news broke that dorner was moving close by. >> i found out when my mom called me crying coming to get me. i don't know. it

's ted rowlands has moran the story. he's joining us now. what are you finding out, ted? >> reporter: well, wolf, it is just another tragic story coming out of chicago. another teenager loses her life. as you mention, a 14-year-old girl who was up on stage with the president, listening to him talk about gun violence, would soon find out that her sister was also shot and killed. when president obama returned to chicago last week to talk about gun violence, 14-year-old destiny warren was one of the high school students standing behind him. a few hours later, destiny's 18-year-old sister was shot and killed in this alley in north chicago. >> all this gun violence that's going on out here, you never think it will be your child. this is the hardest thing for me in my life. >> reporter: according to family members, jenay wasn't the intended target. the same was apparently true in 15-year-old heidi's murder. her parents also attended the president's chicago speech where he said this about the girl's death. >> what happened is not unique. >> reporter: the parents say they were heart broken t
